Palatka, Florida — The tight-knit community of Palatka, Florida, is reeling after a heartbreaking incident claimed the life of one of their own. Sixteen-year-old Baylee Holbrook tragically lost her life on Thursday morning after a lightning strike during a hunting trip with her father. The devastating incident has left the community in mourning and coming together in a show of support for the grieving family.
Baylee, a student at Palatka Junior-Senior High School, passed away surrounded by her family at the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon while Baylee and her father were hunting in the great outdoors. Lightning struck a tree nearby, and the powerful discharge glanced off the tree, hitting Baylee’s father and rendering him unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he was met with a heart-wrenching sight: his beloved daughter was not breathing.
Without hesitation, he called 911 and immediately began performing CPR in a desperate attempt to save his daughter’s life. Paramedics swiftly arrived at the scene, and Baylee was rushed to HCA Florida Putnam Hospital. Despite the grave circumstances, medical professionals at Putnam Hospital managed to stabilize her condition, after which she was urgently transferred to UF Health Shands in critical condition.

The news of Baylee’s ordeal touched the hearts of many in the Palatka community. On Wednesday evening, a poignant vigil was held where people gathered to offer their prayers and support to Baylee’s family. Many also visited the hospital to demonstrate their solidarity with the Holbrook family during this incredibly difficult time.
Family spokesperson Willie McKinnon expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community, saying, “This community, when one of their own is hurt, they come out in full force to support them.”
Palatka Junior-Senior High School organized a special event for “See You at the Pole” day on Wednesday, during which students offered prayers for their fellow classmate, Baylee. School officials also encouraged students and faculty to wear green on Thursday as a visible symbol of their support for the Holbrook family.
