The Oakland Police Department is partnering with the Special Olympics to light the way for acceptance and inclusion by supporting the Special Olympics’ Law Enforcement Torch Run, which seeks to increase public awareness and generate resources for the movement.
The Torch Run has been held in Florida since 1984 with agencies throughout the state acting as Guardians of the Flame as they carry the Flame of Hope through every county. This year, local runs were canceled due to the pandemic and replaced with a virtual Torch Run.
“More than 58,000 unified partners and athletes with intellectual disabilities receive health exams and compete in year-round sports competitions at no cost to them or their families. By helping the police department to raise funds, even more athletes will get to experience the joy of sports through the programs of Special Olympics Florida,” said Lt. Angela Campbell, who is spearheading the effort for the Oakland Police Department. “Help us share a message with courageous Special Olympics athletes that COVID-19 could not stop us!”
The Oakland Police Department is hoping to raise $5,000 for the non-profit and is challenging the community to support their Torch Run by donating.
