Lake County to Host Stand Down Event for Homeless Veterans

Lake County Veterans Services will host its first Stand Down event on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at 101 East Maud St. in Tavares.  Services provided will include health/dental care, meals, basic hygiene care, employment assistance, housing assistance and Social Security Disability assistance.

Today, Stand Down refers to a grassroots, community-based intervention program designed to help the nation’s homeless veterans “combat” life on the streets. Homeless veterans are brought together in a single location for one to three days and are provided access to the community resources needed to begin addressing their individual problems and start rebuilding their lives.

In the military, Stand Down afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment.

Today’s Stand Down affords the same opportunity to homeless veterans. A dedicated team of military veterans and civilians including, Lake County Treatment Court Mentors, The Counseling & Development Center in Tavares, The Veterans Organization of Resource & Recovery for the Homeless (V.O.R.R.H.), the Lake Nona Veteran’s Medical Center and Lake County Veterans Services have continued the movement to help homeless Veterans in Lake County.

Lake County Veterans Services asks the public to spread the word regarding the event, so that local homeless veterans can be reached and may benefit from the assistance provided at the event.
